Victoria LGBT Counselling

During a meeting at a pride centre one day, a person popped their head in the door to inquire what was going on. Someone answered, “It’s an LGBTTQQIA meeting…you know, the alphabet soup people.” Sometimes the term LGBTTQQIA is used to attempt to cover the gamut of human sexual and gender expression, and it can seem like a mouthful. The terms Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Two-spirited, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual are sometimes placed under the umbrella term “Queer.” However you do, or do not, define yourself, queer people have unique perspectives and challenges. Living in a large city may afford some the chance to be “out” (living their sexuality authentically), but for people who live in smaller towns or rural places, or for those belonging to certain religious or ethnic communities, being out can be difficult at best.
